Modernizing proven technology

The task 

Professional construction companies all over the world own hundreds of Utility Tunnelling machines supplied by Herrenknecht. As a Herrenknecht customer of many years, the experienced company Züblin also has several TBMs and containers in its machine park, enabling it to react flexibly to project queries at short notice. But some components are already more than ten years old and no longer correspond to the latest technical standards. So as to be able to utilize the full potential of this tried-and-tested tunnelling technology in the future, Züblin opts to have all of its machinery modernized.

The Herrenknecht service solution

In close collaboration with Züblin, Herrenknecht carries out inspections of the machine park and submits detailed proposals for practical upgrades of individual TBMs. Considering the fundamentally modular design displayed by Herrenknecht, technological developments can be easily installed, even at a later date. At Züblin, Herrenknecht upgrades three machines: control technology is modernized in two cases (incl. update to Windows 7 and volume-controlled bentonite control incl. upgrade of the bentonite boxes) and the power supply adapted for one machine. And finally, the feeder lines for all machines are standardized at 960 Volt for future projects. Work is carried out directly at Züblin. Experienced assembly experts from Herrenknecht work along with the Züblin factory crew, giving rise to an additional knowledge transfer.

Project advantages

• On the basis of inspections, Herrenknecht can modernize even older tunnelling technology using the appropriate upgrades.

• Technical upgrades extend the service life of proven technology and are usually more budget-friendly than new acquisitions. 

• Both the inspection and any work required can be carried out either directly at the customer’s yard or at Herrenknecht.
