A sewage tunnel was constructed between Sariyer and Baltaliman, along the Bosporus coast on the European side of Istanbul, to dam the contamination of seawater on the Bosporus.
Work commenced with a Double Shield TBM (S-166) in July 2000. With a diameter of 2,870mm, the TBM tunneled through slightly less than 9.5 kilometers of limestone, sandstone, and silt. Tunnelling ended in March 2003 when the machine entered the target shaft.
