Singapore has experienced an enormous economic growth during the last few years. Due to the number of inhabitants, five million, traffic infrastructure requirements have increased, too. Since Singapore has only limited space, the expansion of the metro system is the best solution in terms of time and space. The objective is to expand the network by 2020 to 278 kilometers which means to double the length of the actual MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) network.
For the Phase 2 extension of the Downtown Line with a total length of almost 10.2 kilometers Herrenknecht delivered ten machines, six EPB Shields and four Mixshields, each with a diameter of 6,600mm. The first Mixshield started tunnelling in July 2011. In mid June 2014 the tunnel builder celebrated the last breakthrough for the ten Herrenknecht machines.
The total lenth of tunnelling of all Herrenknecht machines employed for the metro in Singapore (among them North-East Line, Circle Line, Downtown Line Phase 2 and Pahse 3) amounts to almost 53 kilometers.
