The "Mawan Cross-Sea Passage" in Shenzhen will be a total of 8.05 kilometers long. 2,060 meters of the twin-tube road tunnel, each with three lanes, will be built under the sea by mechanized tunnelling.
On 30 October 2021, a 15.51-meter-wide, 105-meter-long and 3,700-tonne Herrenknecht Mixshield started its work on one of the two tubes. In addition to soft ground, the TBM "Pengcheng" encountered underground hard rock and fracture zones with strengths of up to 193 MPa. The minimum curve radius was 600 meters. It broke through on 8 July 2024
