Mumbai Thane-Borivali Road Link
India, Mumbai
2025 – today

Like many major cities around the world, the greater Mumbai metropolitan area suffers from chronic traffic congestion, especially on the road network. The Thane - Borivali Road Link is intended to help relieve this situation. As a two-tube tunnel with three lanes each, it will run in an east-west direction under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and create a new connection between the districts of Thane and Borivali. It is estimated that driving time will be reduced from more than 1 hour to approx. 15 minutes.

Herrenknecht is supplying a total of four specialists for mechanized tunnelling in hard rock for this challenging construction project: four Single Shield TBMs, each with a diameter of 13.28 meters for excavating predominantly moderately weathered basalt with a uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of up to 150 Megapascal. In addition to the four tunnel boring machines, the customer ordered from the Herrenknecht Group the conveyor belt system (H+E, Germany) as well as multi-service vehicles for the lining segments logistics (TMS, France). Two of the TBMs will drive the northern tunnel, which is around 10 kilometers long, and the other two will drive the southern tunnel, which is also around 10 kilometers long.

Customer acceptance for the first machine colossus took place at the Herrenknecht site in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in February 2025.
