Germany's largest oilfield is in the North Sea where the black gold is pumped up by the Mittelplate drilling platform. To create a better connection to the mainland of Schleswig-Holstein, an oil and a water pipeline were to be laid between Mittelplate and the Dieksand land station. The construction work presented typical marine challenges for man and machine: tides, rough waters with wind speeds of up to 75 kilometers per hour and severe erosion because of the salty sea air.
Two HDD Rigs drilled the way for the two pipelines. The horizontal drilling work was completed in mid-May 2005, one month earlier than expected. In only two months, 7,500 meters of pipeline were laid. On conclusion of the project, an oil and a water pipeline now connect the Mittelplate drilling platform with the Dieksand land station.
