A spectacular project could be completed in 1997: A tunnel with a diameter of 9.4 meters for the Metro Line 2 in Cairo, with a total length of 22 kilometers and 20 metro stations after its completion. Project challenged include densely-populated residential areas, precious historic buildings and the first-time crossing of the Nile River.
Two identical Herrenknecht Mixshields performed their job excellently withstanding high water pressures beneath the Nile River at depths of up to 30 meters. In June 1995 and in December 1997, both machines reached the target shaft as scheduled; last but not least due to several innovative features, which had been developed for this project: a bidirectional cutting wheel, a vacuum erector for easy segment handling or an automated slurry circuit.
