The first metro line in Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city, was inaugurated on December 1, 2011 when the 20th anniversary of the declaration of independence was celebrated. Until now, Almaty's metro system consists only of this single line but plans for the extension of the network have already been worked out.
An underground section of the new metro line with a length of 2,666 meters was excavated by a Herrenknecht EPB Shield from April 2006 to the successfull breakthrough on July 25, 2008.
