Marseille has had a metro network since 1977 with two lines available since 1984. Line 1 was to be extended to La Fourragére by 2.5 kilometers. For this project, a Herrenknecht EPB Shield started tunnelling in December 2006. Only 13 month later, on January 22, 2008 the machine entered the target shaft after driving though conglomerate. marl, sandstone, brown coal and sand.
