Our contribution to the environment

Energy-efficient tunnelling technology

Our products are developed to be energy-efficient and save energy costs. In order to provide our customers with the best possible support even after the machine has been completed and thus contribute to a sustainable construction industry, we have expanded our digital IoT platform Herrenknecht.CONNECTED to include energy management. By recording the energy consumption of our TBMs and all the equipment on the jobsite in near real time, we receive targeted analyses that help us identify consumption patterns. This increases awareness and transparency.

In our remanufacturing facility, after project completion we professionally remanufacture and refurbish tried-and-tested machines and components for reuse. This opens up new potential for our industry and is economical, environmentally friendly and good for the carbon footprint of your construction project. Whether transport infrastructure for the transportation of people and goods, efficient supply and disposal systems or pipelines – our sophisticated technologies and processes are designed to have as little impact on nature as possible.

Expertise in deep geothermal energy

Our deep drilling rigs in the Business Unit Exploration create key prerequisites for the targeted development and extraction of new energy sources. With innovative technology and the financing of a professorship for technical petrophysics in Karlsruhe, we are committed to the expansion of deep geothermal energy throughout Germany and Europe. Because geothermal energy is one of the most efficient renewable energy sources there is and, thanks to its permanent availability, is able to cover the base load in the power grid. Thanks to our shareholding in the deep drilling company H. Anger's Söhne, we not only have the necessary drilling rig technology, but also expertise in the drilling of deep geothermal boreholes.

Our own renewable energy generation

At our headquarters in Schwanau, we have been using near-surface geothermal energy to heat and cool administrative buildings for many years. Photovoltaic systems have been continuously expanded at the Schwanau and Kehl sites since 2005.

Construction of three more photovoltaic systems on the roofs of the plant buildings in Schwanau will begin in the second half of 2024. On completion of the construction project, Herrenknecht AG will have seven photovoltaic systems in operation.
